About the system
This design system was derived from IEEE’s own sources: the Brand Identity Guidelines, the IEEE Digital Style Guide, and the as-shipped styles of ieee.org. Where a guide and the live site disagree, the live site wins and the difference is recorded. Every judgment call and every gap is listed below for IEEE to confirm.
The system at a glance
Colors, type and corner radius live in a single token file. Change a token and every component follows — re-branding is a data change, not an engineering project.
Use the theme switcher at the bottom of any page: IEEE (as shipped), Brand guide (the published button spec), Society (an illustrative Society reskin with Caslon headlines and new corner geometry), and High Contrast (an AAA-oriented variant). No component code changes between them.
IEEE Brand Identity Guidelines (Q1 2025): color names and the recommended text color for each swatch, the font family, the wedge element, and Master Brand rules.
IEEE Digital Style Guide: button styles, link colors, meta-navigation, header, footer, breadcrumbs, search, and accessibility requirements.
ieee.org as shipped: text and surface colors, the type scale, corner radius, and all sample content and imagery on this site.
Primary action color is IEEE Blue (#00629B), as ieee.org ships it. The style guide's button spec uses Purple (#981D97); switch to the Brand guide theme to see it.
Links are IEEE Blue, as shipped. The style guide recommends #0063D7, which is not in the palette.
Muted text is #6F7276, from the style guide's tertiary-button CSS. The palette's Gray (#75787B) is 4.44:1 on white and fails WCAG AA for body text.
Buttons are pills; cards are square — two corner-radius tokens, as measured on ieee.org.
Meta-navigation is 12px, the guide's minimum. ieee.org ships 10px.
The wedge is used sparingly at 45°, per the Brand Identity Guidelines: a cut hero corner, footer and CTA anchor bars, and an optional label box.
Should the primary button be IEEE Blue (as shipped) or Purple (as specified)?
The Brand Identity Guidelines print Dark Teal as HEX 31787B but RGB 0,115,119 (#007377). Which is correct?
IEEE recommends white text on Cyan, Teal, Dark Orange and Gray, but those pairings fail WCAG at body size. Should they be large-text only?
Are there official specs for breakpoints, focus states, forms, tables or cards? The responsive-design guideline page currently returns a 404.
Can we use IEEE's downloadable wedge assets for exact proportions?
Use the theme switcher at the bottom of any page: IEEE (as shipped), Brand guide (the published button spec), Society (an illustrative Society reskin with Caslon headlines and new corner geometry), and High Contrast (an AAA-oriented variant). No component code changes between them.
